CWA Local 13500

Letter from Morty Bahr-President of CWA
If you are presently not using a Cingular Wireless service, I urge you to consider switching to Cingular where you will receive the special 15% CWA discount while also supporting your fellow CWA members at Cingular.
Most important, Cingular is the only wireless company that can, and does proclaim that it is "Proud to be a Union Company".  More than 20,000 CWA members work for Cingular as technicians, customer service representatives and sales employees in Cingular Stores.  Cingular takes the highroad approach to labor relations, supporting neutrality and card-check organizing rights, and working with CWA to build a positive partnership.
       You can go to
www.cwa-union.org and click on the Cingular icon.  You'll be connected with a CWA member at Cingular who will help you make the switch.

Levi Strauss has decided to stop manufacturing their jeans in
the United States. We believe that it is important to offer to
our members an opportunity to buy Union made / American made
jeans.

The Union Jean & Apparel Company is organized under the UFCW
Local 1099 and is a Union made / American made distributor.
Their jeans can be purchased with the CWA logo on a patch over
the back pocket.

JOB HUNTING
Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6 a.m. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB. At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in.....AMERICA.....

WANT TO SHOW YOUR PATRIOTISM AND YOUR UNION SPIRIT? Rather than buy American flags made in overseas factories, you can purchase them online at a union-only product web site. The site,
www.buyunionnow.com , sells flags made in Florida for $21.98, less if you buy them in bulk. You can also find union-made "United We Stand" bumper stickers, flags for car windows, yard signs and flag patches.

If you are doing some holiday shopping, or any time you buy clothes, check out a website that tells you the story behind the labels.
At
www.behindthelabels.org , you'll learn which brand name companies are exploiting workers around the world. The site's sponsors include UNITE, religious leaders and student activists fighting for human rights.
The site includes videos, photographs and stories of life inside sweatshops. It offers breaking news, chats with workers, activists and experts in the field.

Visit www.unionlabel.org for information.

How to be Certain It's Union-made in the USA

If you're looking at one of the new cars, light trucks or vans that are both union-made in the US and imported, you can determine where it was assembled by checking two labels that each new vehicle sold in the US is required by law to display.

Simplest and quickest is the Parts Content Information sheet that usually is posted on one of the vehicle's windows. It lists, among other things, the location of the "final assembly point" of each vehicle.

The second label to check is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

If the first character of the 17 character VIN is a 1, 4 or 5, the vehicle was assembled in the US. The VIN is stamped into a small metal plate attached to each vehicle's dashboard on the driver's side, often near the junction of the dashboard and the windshield.

Here is the meaning of some of the other first characters of the VIN 2-Canada, 3-Mexico, 6-Australia, 9-Brazil, J-Japan, K-Korea.
